People in Scotland will be allowed to legally change their gender without the need for a medical diagnosis and from a younger age, after controversial plans were approved by MSPs.
The Gender Recognition Reform Bill was passed by 86 votes to 39 at Holyrood on Thursday afternoon, in one of the last acts before the Parliament rose for Christmas recess.
By pushing ahead with the plans, Scotland has become the first part of the UK to amend the Gender Recognition Act, which has been in place for almost 20 years.
