Evidence has emerged that members of the school’s Phi Psi fraternity used date-rape drugs, had sex with underage girls and bragged about the frat house’s “rape attic.”
to a redacted version of what appear to be fraternity meeting minutes documenting life at Phi Psi in 2013 and 2014. Names and photos of most students are blacked out or replaced with the word “Name” in brackets. Many students mentioned are presumably no longer at the school.
The document lays out numerous disturbing claims. “Your parties suck, you have both a rape tunnel AND a rape attic ,” one frat brother appears to say. Under a list of “tank top ideas,” a member suggests printing a shirt that says, “We don’t drink during the day, we BLACK OUT.” Another member refers to a “14 year old Cali girl,” adding, “I don’t know if he sealed the deal on the beach or in his room but either way kudos to him.” The document also contains homophobic and racist slurs.
Morgin Goldberg, 22, a Swarthmore protestor who has been sleeping at Phi Psi since Saturday, told thethat she had been sexually assaulted by a member of Phi Psi when she was in her first year at the school, and that the so-called rape attic was widely known on campus. She said she had notified deans and Swarthmore’s president.
In early April, students started a Tumblr blog titled “Why Swarthmore fraternities must go,” containing multiple anonymous accounts of disturbing encounters at fraternities. Wrote one young woman, “It was my first party of Freshman year at the frats and a brother took me to the basement and raped me with a foreign object.”
President Smith, an African-American literature scholar who has led the school since 2015, condemned the accounts in the document, calling them “vulgar,” “deeply offensive” and “antithetical to the values of the College.” Smith also referenced a larger examination the university is conducting of fraternity life on campus. A task force is due to make recommendations on May 3.
