A 5-year-old boy on that morning in Sutherland Springs, blood-soaked and barely alive when a first responder found him lying beside his dead mother and step-sister, won’t forget. Ryland Ward, now 11, has undergone more than 30 surgeries in the intervening years as doctors continue working to repair the massive damage done to his body by the ravaging effects of battlefield bullets. He can no longer run the way he used to, is still tormented by nightmares.
Kris Workman, the congregation’s young music director and Morgan Workman’s brother-in-law, was shot twice. Paralyzed from the waist down, he’s been told by doctors it’s highly unlikely he’ll ever walk again. He’s one among many who can’t forget.
