A man accused of attempting to rape a woman in downtown Salt Lake City is causing questions to be raised over whether our court system is too lenient on sex off

Suspect in Salt Lake sexual assault had been given leniency on previous sentence enders.

According to a Feb. 8 affidavit, Marcos Reyes attacked and forced a woman to the ground who was walking around the area of 100 Main Street, puled her pants down and started brutally assaulting her. Leniency in the court systems is something that has been fought for in the last 20-years to give low grade offenders a better chance at succeeding in society, said Chris Bertram, a former deputy police chief.

Court documents show Reyes violated his probation within two days of being sentenced on his sexual battery charges by absconding. “In cases like this, I tend to retrospectively go back and say we as a society have to ask, ‘did we miss something?’ because in this case the outcome is significantly bad,” Bertram said.
