According to court records, 19-year-old Josiah Martinez drove a red Subaru over a pedestrian lying down on East 11th Avenue around 11:30 p.m. before speeding away. Earlier Monday, police reported the man hit by Martinez later died at the hospital. Martinez is charged with leaving the scene of a crash and failure to render aid and was remanded at the Anchorage Jail.
Witnesses — other drivers who stopped to check on the man in the road — described hearing the Subaru’s engine rev and accelerate toward the pedestrian. The witnesses said Martinez was “driving too fast for a residential neighborhood” and his brake lights came on for a “split second” when he ran over the man.
Witnesses described the Subaru to police, who Monday morning found a car matching the description outside an apartment on East 10th Avenue. Police interviewed two men inside the apartment and took both of them to APD headquarters for more questioning.Next-of-kin notifications are underway. Most Read
