Discover the journey of Boom Supersonic in developing the first commercial supersonic aircraft since Concorde.

, XB-1 Chief Flight Test Engineer at Boom. We discussed Boom’s journey into developing the first commercial supersonic aircraft since Concorde, from its XB-1 demonstrator to its planned Overture airliner.Any discussion on supersonic flight, like this one, inevitably has to start with the legacy left behind by the groundbreaking engineering behind the“Concorde was a marvelous technical accomplishment, but it was unaffordable to passengers.

“The XB-1 was originally envisioned as a one-third scale demonstration of the airliner. It’s a stepping stone to prove our capabilities and learn where the pain points are,” he told IE. Blake explained that this pragmatic approach enables Boom to “bring these technologies together to create a supersonic jet that’s efficient, safe, and affordable.”The XB-1 has also taught Boom invaluable lessons about supersonic design. According to Blake, one of the most surprising insights was about low-speed performance.

Nick elaborates on the economic potential: “Right now, tens of millions of people fly business class across the Atlantic. For the same price—or less—we’re offering twice the speed and the ability to sleep in a real bed at your destination. That’s a game-changer.”One of the biggest challenges with supersonic jets, especially Concorde, has been criticism for their environmental impact, particularly noise pollution.

Boom has also worked closely with agencies like the FAA on the regulatory front. “We invited them in early, showed them everything, and asked for their feedback. The result? What could take 90 days took 90 minutes,” Blake told IE. Nick adds that the industry must continue to innovate. “We need to iterate. Overture 1 is just the start. Overture 2 and 3 will push the envelope further, delivering greater speed, efficiency, and accessibility,” he explained.
