ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) -An Alaska Superior Court judge who ruled that laws surrounding Alaska’s correspondence programs are unconstitutional is facing backlash heading into the November election.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Superior Court Judge Adolph Zeman, who is one of 19 judges the Alaska Judicial Councilvoters retain on their November ballots, is facing a targeted campaign to remove him from the bench, after previously ruling laws surrounding Alaska’s homeschool Correspondence programs were unconstitutional.
Zeman told Alaska’s News Source he was disappointed Babcock and DeWitt’s “no” votes appeared to to be based on his decision to strike down the correspondence law allowing the state to reimburse families for homeschool expenses at private schools, arguing it violated the state constitution’s prohibitions against spending state money on private education.
“I’m one of 25,000 you know, families that are were impacted by Judge Zeman’s decision,” Minnery said. “This particular ruling impacted so many families that it’s egregious enough, and it’s also a fundamental misunderstanding of the Constitution that he either inserted, like I said before, either inserted his private opinion on it, or he doesn’t have the competence to understand what the founders meant.
However, Zeman said impartiality, not politics, should be the deciding factor if someone is suited to be on the bench. Zeman said one person or group’s political views never influences his decision. He insists he is trying to apply the law properly and fairly.
