A Daleville City Schools superintendent obtained a temporary restraining order against a parent after receiving a threatening text message. The parent claims the message was a result of talk-to-text error, while the superintendent cites safety concerns given the parent's profession as a weapons dealer and recent school shootings. The parent suggests political motivation behind the legal action.
DALEVILLE, Ala. - Daleville City Schools Superintendent Joshua Robertson claims a parent sent him a threatening text message , prompting a judge to issue a temporary restraining order keeping the parent away from Robertson and his family, who claim the messages terrified them.
The parent, Frank Sanders portrays a different version of what happened, saying the message which he admits sending was the result of an inaccurate talk-to-text transcription. In a court filing asking for the Temporary Restraining Order, the superintendent said Sanders — identified in the complaint as a licensed weapons dealer — sent the superintendent a text on April 9 at 6:05 p.m. that read: “As of right now I’ll just shoot every one of you for what you just did thank you have a great day also I will shoot for what you wife did as well last year.
”Robertson’s wife works for the school system as the assistant band director. It’s not clear what Sanders believes she did last year. His filing on Monday, April 20 says he received another message from Sanders 27 minutes later stating the phone’s talk-to-text feature inserted the word “shoot” when it should have read “sue. ” Sanders claims witnesses heard him say “sue,” and, in the subsequent text included in Robertson’s complaint, Sanders told Robertson no one would be harmed.
The follow up message did little to resolve Robertson’s concerns. He claims he removed his two children from in-person school and that he and his wife suffered mental anguish, considering a spike in school shootings during recent years and knowing that Sanders sold arms professionally. Sanders suspects more than fear may be involved.
According to his court-filed response, he has submitted his name for consideration to serve on the appointed Daleville school board and suggested Robertson’s legal action may be politically motivated. After Dale County Circuit judges Bill Filmore and Kimberly Clark recused, Houston County Circuit Judge Henry D. “Butch” Binford late last week issued a restraining order directing Sanders to stay away from Robertson and his family, with Sanders hoping the order is lifted because he needs to visit the Daleville campus because his children attend classes there.
Court records do not reflect criminal charges related to the alleged threats. The restraining order request also references a separate text message dated July 17 and purportedly from Sanders that mentioned the possible raffling of an AR-15. The filing does not clearly state how that message is related to the matter. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
