If Disney did release a second film to follow up on one of its massive successes, it was typically straight-to-video and wasn't expected to rake in much additional cash. Still, Toy Story 2 proved the potential for blockbuster sequels—but even that was nothing compared to Toy Story 3.
5 Minions - $1.159 Billion Grossed Illumination had a good sense that Despicable Me 3 had the potential to hit $1 billion since Minions had managed a few years before in 2015. The film focused on the titular yellow minions, who, by this point, had already made a surprising mark on popular culture. The irresistible creatures appealed to adults and children alike, so an entire adventure centered on their mischief had great potential.
