The Porter County Park Board approved a preliminary design Thursday evening for a new amphitheater at Sunset Hill Farm County Park that will offer Americans With Disabilities Act compliance and wider views of the surrounding prairie.
A private donation of $155,000 got the project moving and the Porter County Board of Commissioners approved an additional $150,000 budget for the project upon first reading.A design presented by Cedar Forest Products was selected by the park board and they are expected to work as the project supplier, though a contract has yet to be signed.
“Directly in front of that will be a concrete plaza for ADA seating,” said Porter County Parks Superintendent Jake McEvoy. “We don’t quite know how big the area is going to be.” He expects the site work and concrete costs to match or slightly exceed the cost of the structure. The open-concept structure will capitalize on views of the restored prairie, rolling hills, and forested areas. And the building itself is expected to improve the view. While already available to high school bands, wedding couples, and Shakespeare in the Park, the hope is the inclusive amenities and improved views and acoustics will see them visiting more frequently.
