Iconic video game franchise Street Fighter has had its live-action movie and TV show rights won by Dune & Godzilla studio Legendary Entertainment.
Legendary Entertainment, the company behind Dune and the latest Godzilla and King Kong films, recently won the live-action movie and television rights to Street Fighter. Famed arcade studio Capcom started the popular fighting game series of the same name in 1987. It wasn't until its 1991 sequel, Street Fighter II, that the franchise truly took the world by storm, resulting in over 20 main games, numerous spinoffs, and several adaptations to film and television to date.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Street Fighter's live-action and television show rights have been secured by Legendary Entertainment. Any upcoming projects within the franchise will be developed with Capcom. This will include a new Street Fighter movie currently in development. No specifics regarding the film's plot or characters have been revealed.
Street Fighter Has A Long History of Adaptations Although Hollywood has recently set its sights on video games as a source for several new film and television projects, to include Uncharted, God of War, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us, Street Fighter has already seen its fair share of adaptations. The Japanese-developed game spawned various anime films and shows, notably 1994's Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and 1995's Street Fighter II V television series.
In the decades since, several attempts for future live-action Street Fighter film adaptations have faced development hell, to include a 2003 sequel to the 1994 film that would have featured Van Damme reprising his role as Guile and starring alongside Dolph Lundgren. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li managed to make it to screens in 2009, but was lambasted by critics and audiences, with many calling it one of the worst video game-to-film adaptations at that time.
