Severe storms across several states Monday killed at least two people, damaged houses, cut electricity to more than 1.1 million homes and businesses, and canceled or delayed thousands of flights.

A preliminary assessment of damage in Knoxville, Tennessee, found that an EF-2 tornado touched down with winds up to 130 mph and a path as wide as 200 yards , the National Weather Service office in Morristown, Tennessee, announced Tuesday. The office said it will continue to assess the damage across the area.

More than 1.1 million customers were without power Monday evening across Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia, according toBy mid-afternoon Tuesday, the number of customers without power had dropped to about 200,000 in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia and Tennessee.
