Set in the summer of 1974, the novel follows two cousins on a road trip to witness Knievel’s attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon on his motorcycle. Also on board? $1 million worth of stolen mari…

“Lowdown Road” by Scott Von Doviak is published by Hard Case Crime. The Texas-based author, originally from Maine, has been writing film reviews for years for publications including the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the A.V. Club. He’s written three books on cinema, “Hick Flicks: The Rise and Fall of Redneck Cinema,” “If You Like The Terminator…” and “Stephen King Films FAQ.”

Von Doviak answered questions about his novel, published by Hard Case Crime, via telephone from his home in Austin. This interview has been condensed and edited for length and clarity.I’d had the idea of doing something with Evil Knievel and the Snake River Canyon jump for a while. Years and years ago, I started writing a screenplay where a bunch of different people were on their way up there, but it was more of a “Dazed and Confused” mode rather than a crime story.

Chuck came first because when I started I was simultaneously writing a short story and the first chapter of the book. I wrote it as a self-contained thing where he has a whole opening chapter adventure. We know he’s just out of jail, and he gets involved with this woman who turns out to be married to a sheriff’s deputy, and it goes downhill from there. So he was first, but I was taking these archetypes from those movies and twisting them a little.

That one took place in three different timelines, and it was a more complicated story and had a lot more characters. I’m not really much of an outliner, but for this one, the map served as the outline. The first third is in central Texas, the middle third is on the road, and the third act is up at the Snake River Canyon Gym. So I had not an outline, but a map, and I looked at some places along the way and tried to think of some things that might happen to them.
