Inside the secret Google DeepMind mafia of founders working on new stealth AI startups
Some of the best-funded companies are emerging from the tech giants, which are repositories of AI talent.Year-old startup Inflection AI made headlines when itThe startup, which launched its chatbot Pi in May, was set up by Mustafa Suleyman, the cofounder of Alphabet's artificial intelligence research lab DeepMind. "We came out of stealth a year after incorporation,"said Devang Agrawal, former DeepMind employee and cofounder of sales-analysis startup In London, home to nearly 900 DeepMind staffers per LinkedIn estimates, ex-DeepMind researcher Jonathan Godwin has been working on a startup that will use AI to solve carbon capture, as well as creating renewable fuels, and batteries, he told Insider. His startup Orbital Materials launched in 2022, and focuses on applying AI to material sciences.
"This is an exciting time for AI and the potential impact of artificial general intelligence," he told Insider. His startup, which is in the process of being set up and is having initial conversations with investors about obtaining seed funding, focuses on using AI agents. "DeepMind alumni have already caught the attention of VC investors," he added. Last month, Mistral, an AI startup founded by DeepMind alum, securedStill, Li and Godwin told Insider that the prospect of attracting hefty funds from investors was not a motivation to set up shop.And they also have options.
