The Class of ’74 came to their 50th reunion from across the U.S. and Mexico with a sense of history. Their school was 120 years old when they were sophomores.
They came in from across Texas , from across the nation, from Mexico . Five decades had passed since the 30 women sitting in the front pews of St. Matthew Catholic Church on a recent Sunday had all been together. The distances of time, rather than geography, defined the gathering. Their high school already was 120 years old and embedded in San Antonio ’s history when they were still sophomores.

Its original location remained a peaceful, tree-studded limestone landmark along the River Walk. Only a few photos in a central corridor reminded people that the Southwest School of Art — now a part of the expanding downtown footprint of the University of Texas at San Antonio called the Southwest Campus — had once been a girls’ school.
‘A great honor’: West Side facility dedicated in memory of late boxer According to the Texas State Historical Association, the academy drew students from what was then “western” Texas and from Mexico, with accommodations for 70 to 80 boarders.
She’s a standout student and campus leader. She interviewed a civil rights icon. And she’s 10. Bertrand said the all-girls environment offered a space where no topic was taboo. That freedom also had to do with the leadership of the nuns and teachers. “We were taught by sisters who were chemists, mathematicians and political scientists,” Bertrand said. “They were formidable, but they were also nurturing women.
