Attorney general seizes control of local PD amid scandal over racial slurs.

State authorities have formally taken control of an investigation into the Clark Police Department and township leaders after NJ Advance Media revealed secret recordings of the longtime mayor and police brass using racial slurs.

The state Office of Public Integrity and Accountability “has assumed the investigation into the leadership of the Clark Police Department and township,” Steven Barnes, a spokesman for acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin, said in a statement Thursday evening. The Union County Prosecutor’s Office, which has had control of the police department since July 2020, “has been directed to maintain their supersession authority” over the department “until further notice,” Barnes said.
