The teacher allegedly used a full-nelson shoulder lock to lift a Clearview Elementary School second grader off his feet on Oct. 4 after the youngster unsuccessfully tried to hit the teacher who was trying to subdue him an a school hallway, according to the student’s mother.
A report of a Waukegan elementary school teacher allegedly choking a student using a wrestling hold not allowed in amateur competition in Illinois is under investigation by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services . Michelle Thomas, the boy’s mother and a school safety officer at the Brookside campus of Waukegan High School, said as her son described the incident to her, she wanted to know precisely what happened. “I told him to show me how the teacher choked him,” she said.
spokesperson Deborah Lopez said the situation is under investigation by her office. She said Thursday someone from the school called the hotline on Oct. 4 reporting the incident. At that point, an investigation is mandatory. Nicholas Alatzakis, the communications director for Waukegan Community Unit School District 60, said in an email Thursday the district does not comment on individual student or personnel matters. “Any allegation of inappropriate or aggressive contact with students is taken seriously and investigated thoroughly,” he said in the email.
