A representative for SoCalGas, the operator of the facility, said the company has not taken a position on the legislation and is still reviewing it., which had been operating at 50% capacity, alarming activists and others who have been pushing for permanently closing the facility. The commission ultimately approved an increase that would bring the storage capacity to 60%.

She argued that the years the facility had been temporarily closed, following the 2015 gas leak, helped prove that the claim that the facility was needed have been overstated. Porter Ranch residents, who live adjacent to the SoCalGas property, have for years called for the gas storage facility to be shut down entirely. Many of them are also part of a $1.8 billion settlement offer with SoCalGas over the 2015 gas blowout. Plaintiffs in that case must decide by June 1 if they’ll settle. If less than 97% of them agree to settle, the case could go to trial.
