Joey GarrisonStanford sailing coach John Vandemoer arrives at Boston Federal Court for an arraignment on March 12, 2019, in Boston. John Vandemoer is among several charged in alleged college admissions scam.BOSTON — Former Stanford University head sailing coach John Vandemoer will be sentenced Wednesday on federal racketeering charges after admitting to accepting bribes from college applicants he falsely designated as sailing recruits.
None of the students tied to payments made to Vandemoer's sailing program ultimately made it on Stanford's sailing roster, but the money was collected nonetheless. That initial payment bought Vandemoer's participation in schemes of future students, according to prosecutors. Singer funneled an additional $110,000 into the sailing program in the spring of 2018 for a second student to be designated as a sailing recruit, but the student chose to attend Brown University instead.
Prosecutors have argued a lower sentence is just because Vandemoer has"otherwise led a law-abiding life, did not directly profit financially from his crimes, promptly accepted responsibility for them, appears genuinely remorseful, and isBut they say a prison term is nonetheless warranted – not just as just punishment, but because it is"the only way to deter similarly situated individuals.
In their own sentencing memorandum filed Friday, attorneys for Vandemoer – who was fired from Stanford when he pleaded guilty – say he did not personally profit from the scheme"though he easily could have." Like the prosecution, they note that Stanford did not lose money under the scheme and no one was admitted because of the scheme.
