In a preview for Shazam #5 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora, Billy Batson is floating in the cold recess of space. As he loses consciousness, his sister, Mary Marvel, comes to his aid. She tries to revive her brother but panics when she realizes he was in space for too long.Mary Marvel utters the magic word "Shazam!", allowing Zeus to pass along the Living Lighting. The lightning strikes Billy, transforming him into his alter ego, the Captain.

Mary Marvel Can Outrun Lightning Delivered by Gods For the longest time, Mary Marvel shared the powers of Shazam with Billy and their siblings. But during the events of Lazarus Planet: Revenge of the Gods, Mary sacrificed her powers and gave them to Wonder Woman to help her fight the mad goddess Hera. Despite becoming mortal, Hippolyta rewarded Mary for her bravery with a blessing of her own.

The transformation Billy and Mary undergo is implied to happen the instant they say the magic word. But in a fraction of a second, Mary was able to dodge Zeus' lightning to make sure it hit Billy instead of her. That's not an easy feat and something one would think only a speedster would be able to avoid. But the Shazam Family are partially blessed by literal gods of speed. Sure, a connection to the Speed Force is usually a requirement for mortals to reach unbelievable speeds.

Mary Marvel Proves the Gods are Just as Good as the Flash's Speed Force While the Flash and his extended family are the undisputed masters of speed, not every hero needs access to the Speed Force to pull off stunts like Barry or Wally. Mary Marvel's speed is quick enough to outrun something that happens in an instant, a pace that's usually reserved for Flashes. Sure, the Scarlet Speedster might find ways to improve upon or redefine his speed with amazing feats.
