ITV’s forthcoming reality show The Romance Retreat is being billed as ‘Middle-Aged Love Island’
“Can you imagine dating at our age?” a friend asked, rhetorically. He is going through difficulties in his marriage, and is unnerved by the prospect of becoming single again in his later life. “It would be like asking a footballer from the 1950s to play in the Premier League,” he said. “The game has changed completely.”
He’s right, of course. I can remember the days when dating took place in real life rather than virtually, and was exclusively something that other, younger people did. The idea that oldies had a romantic life, never mind a sex life, wasn’t even on the agenda. Today, however, it’s not a curio, it’s an industry, and there’s soon to be a television programme which will turn the matter that made my friend so queasy into entertainment.
