Temperatures in many Bay Area places are expected to reach at least 100 degrees Wednesday.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued the fifth alert of the year on Tuesday in anticipation of the ozone on the atmosphere’s ground level being unhealthy.
According to the district, areas of the far East Bay interior likely will have air quality that is unhealthy for the elderly and very young, and those with heart, respiratory or other health conditions. The South Bay and North Bay are expected to be coated with air that is only moderately healthy. The smog will result from the final remnants of a high-pressure system that has coated California and will bring back the heat and form a low ceiling on the top of the atmosphere, forecasters said. Temperatures in the hottest places in the East Bay and high elevations are expected to be between 102 and 106 in the East Bay on Wednesday and between 105 and 110 on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
