SpaceX offering flights aboard Dragon and Starship to Earth orbit, the Space Station, the moon and Mars
Elon Musk wants to send you to space — if you can pay the fare. SpaceX, the commercial space company of which Musk is CEO, is accepting reservations from people who want to take a trip aboard the company’s spacecraft as soon as the end of the year. It outlined its offerings for trips to Earth orbit and the International Space Station , the moon and Mars on its website this week.
Starbase rising: Rapid expansion, growing pains at SpaceX’s South Texas rocket city Earth orbit missions would last from three to six days and include two or four passengers. Space Station visits are 10 days for four passengers. If the moon or Mars is your desired destination, it may be awhile. The massive Starship that would take you there is still in development at the company’s Starbase near Boca Chica Beach but much work remains before it can carry people.
Rocket Cargo: The Pentagon’s growing interest in SpaceX’s Starship A timeline and details are spotty for a trip to the moon aboard Starship. The seven-day flight will take “up to 12 passengers, with private quarters” more than 384,400 kilometers, or 238,855 miles. Passengers will be able to use Starship’s 1,000 cubic meter nose cone “for entertainment, manufacturing and scientific opportunities.” Even fewer details were available for a Starship Mars mission.
‘Deliberate risk’: SwRI scientist Alan Stern rockets to the edge of space on Virgin Galactic mission Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket flies from its West Texas launch pad on its suborbital flights that give up six passengers a few minutes in space before reentering the atmosphere and landing on the company’s ranch land. The company hasn’t listed its prices, but in 2018 two company officials leaked that flights would be between $200,000 and $300,000. It hasn’t reached that price point yet.
