Tickets to Hawaii on Southwest Airlines finally went on sale this morning, with some one-way fares only costing $49.
Southwest's entry into the Hawaiian market is welcome for a whole category of budget travelers who once could not afford to fly to the island state. In the past, Southwest's entry into a particular market has come hand-in-hand with competitive pricing across all carriers and globally cheaper tickets for travelers; most expect these new Hawaii routes to be no different.
Moving forward, Southwest plans to expand service to three more destinations in Hawaii including Lihue, Kahului and Kona. From California, the carrier plans to soon open routes from San Diego, San Jose and Sacramento – so even if this round of low fares dries up, new routes and fares will soon be on the horizon.Grant Martin works as a writer and product manager in the tech sector.
