For the first time this fall members of the endangered Southern Resident orca population were spotted in Puget Sound.

The sighting was highly anticipated by researchers and enthusiasts since the sighting on Oct. 5 was the first time the whales have been seen south of Admiralty Inlet since April 11.

The Southern Resident killer population is comprised of three stable social groups, named the J, K, and L pods, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife .A team of scientists recently captured a new orca whale calf alongside its mother in a stunning drone video from late September.

Orca Network’s Whale Sighting Network confirmed the orcas seen south of Admiralty Inlet were members of J pod after receiving sighting reports. According to the network, the whales were heard on the Bush Point hydrophone and seen traveling between Whidbey Island and the Kitsap Peninsula.
