Southern Democrats are urging President Biden to select Atlanta for the 2024 Democratic National Convention, according to a letter obtained by NBCNews.
, arguing the choice would solidify the party's gains in Georgia and demonstrate commitment to the entire region.the convention, along with New York City and Chicago. Houston was also in the running until recently; its mayor has now joined Atlanta’s bid, adding his name to the letter.
“Democratic turnout in the state of Georgia is the single greatest reason that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are in the White House today instead of Donald Trump,” the officials wrote, referring to Biden's 2020 victory in the historically red state. “Selecting Atlanta will inspire Democrats in other competitive Southern states to run, to organize, to fundraise, and to volunteer in what is now truly fertile Democratic territory," the letter adds.All three finalist cities have been ramping up their lobbying effort ahead of a decision expected sometime this spring.
