Southern California is set to experience its first significant rainfall in months this weekend, with meteorologists predicting on-and-off showers throughout the region. The storm system, moving in from the northwest, is expected to bring up to 1.5 inches of rain in some areas over the three-day period, beginning as early as Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The heaviest rainfall is anticipated on Sunday night and into Monday, with predictions of half an inch to an inch for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and up to two inches in the mountains and foothills. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly with the arrival of the storm, with highs in the low 60s on Saturday gradually decreasing to the high 50s by Monday. While the rainfall will be a welcome relief for firefighters battling numerous wildfires in the region, it also presents potential hazards. There is a 10% to 20% chance of thunderstorms, which could exacerbate the risk of fires reigniting, particularly in areas scarred by recent blazes. Meteorologists warn that the dry ground after a fire can cause water to pool and float debris, increasing the risk of flash floods and mudslides. However, current predictions suggest that the incoming rainfall will not be sufficient to trigger widespread debris flows or mudslides. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the San Bernardino County Mountains, including Wrightwood, Big Bear, Crestline Running Springs, and Lake Arrowhead, beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, and lasting until 4 p.m. on Monday, January 27. The warning anticipates 12 to 18 inches of snow above 6,000 feet and three to six inches of snow above 4,000 feet. Road conditions are expected to be hazardous, particularly on bridges and overpasses, with sudden changes in visibility possible. Authorities urge caution for anyone traveling in the mountains and recommend postponing non-essential trips
