Parents of kids who attend schools at South San Antonio ISD react as board members discuss closing four schools at a meeting Jan. 18. The board decided to keep the schools open but some trustees changed their minds and voted Wednesday to close three of them. The South San Antonio Independent School District board voted Wednesday night to close three schools to plug a looming budget shortfall.

Superintendent Henry Yzaguirre had recommended closing the schools because the cost savings would almost cover a roughly $10 million deficit the district will face in the coming school year, after federal pandemic relief funds run out. Texas Education Agency monitor Abelardo “Abe” Saavedra told board members before Wednesday's vote that they had been made aware of the growing deficit in discussing every budget amendment since August. He listed four that identified a $2 million deficit in August. It reached $10 million in December.

About 45 percent of classroom space district-wide is not being used, Saavedra, once a superintendent at South San himself, has said.
