A South Metro Fire Rescue firefighter was injured after slipping on ice while battling a Friday night blaze in Highlands Ranch.

The firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment, said Eric Hurst, a South Metro Fire spokesman.

The fire department was called at 6:07 p.m. to a house in the 9700 block of Ashley Lane, Hurst said. The fire burned in the basement and first floor and was extinguished within an hour. The cause is unknown and under investigation.The freezing, icy conditions also caused a fire hydrant to freeze, which caused complications at the scene, according to a South Metro Fire Rescue tweet.

Update: The fire burned in the basement and first floor and is now out. One firefighter slipped and fell on ice and has been transported to the hospital with minor injuries. All occupants of the home are safe and uninjured. A frozen fire hydrant added to the challenges on scene.
