“Son Heung-min is not playing in attack so we had a plan B,” Korea coach Hong Myung-bo said. “Hwang Hee-chan got off to a good start, but unfortunately got injured and had to leave the field. Given his current injury status, it will be difficult for Hwang Hee-chan to play in the second game but we will check on his condition.”
The Socceroos picked up just one point from their opening two games in September, and they feared the worst after 19 minutes at Adelaide Oval. Goodwin fired home a spectacular second from outside the area eight minutes after the restart to put Australia ahead 2-1. Nishan Velupillay added a third in stoppage time on debut to confirm China’s third loss in three games.
That result left Saudi Arabia, Australia and Bahrain, which drew with Indonesia 2-2, all with four points.
