U-Haul's Growth Index reveals a significant shift in American migration patterns, with South Carolina emerging as the top destination for movers in 2024. The report highlights the enduring appeal of the Southeast and Southwest regions, while California continues to experience outmigration.
Americans showed a strong preference for southern states in 2024, according to U-Haul 's Growth Index. South Carolina emerged as the top destination for movers for the first time, attracting 51.7% of all one-way U-Haul traffic in and out of the state. Texas, which held the top spot for three consecutive years, slipped to second place, while North Carolina secured third. U-Haul attributes the trend to factors like southern charm, history, beaches, mountains, and a lower cost of living.
California, on the other hand, faced continued outmigration, ranking last on the Growth Index for the fifth year running. U-Haul bases its rankings on the net gain (or loss) of customers using one-way rentals. The company processes over 2.5 million such transactions annually across all 50 states. Florida and Tennessee followed closely behind, claiming fourth and fifth place respectively. Rounding out the top 10 were Arizona, Washington, Indiana, Utah, and Idaho
