Jordan Scruggs is Jaguars’ 2nd-leading tackler this year

South Alabama safety Jordan Scruggs returns an interception vs. Appalachian State on Sept. 21. Scruggs is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens Dec. 9. South Alabama safety Jordan Scruggs plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens on Dec. 9, but is expected to play in Friday’s regular-season finale vs. Texas State, head coach Major Applewhite told

Scruggs has started eight games at Husky safety this season for the Jaguars, though Rickey Hyatt has started three of the last four games at the position. A redshirt junior, Scruggs is second on the South Alabama team with 60 tackles this season, along with two pass breakups and an interception, which he returned 96 yards to set up a touchdown vs. Appalachian State.

On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos first reported Scruggs’ transfer decision on Wednesday, attributing the information to Noah Reisenfeld, Scruggs’ NIL agent. Reisenfeld later confirmed the news to AL.com via direct message on X .Scruggs came to South Alabama from Hutchinson Junior College, and also spent a year each at Central Missouri and Washburn, both Division II schools. The Kansas City, Kan., native redshirted at Washburn as a true freshman, so he has one season of eligibility remaining.

South Alabama hosts Texas State at 2:30 p.m. Friday. The Jaguars are still alive for a spot in the Sun Belt championship game, but would need first-place Louisiana to lose at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday to clinch the division title via tiebreaker.
