Solomon: As he heads to Rice, Jon Kay exits North Shore a high school coaching legend
North Shore football coach Jon Kay hoists the championship trophy after his Mustangs defeated Duncanville 17-10 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the 2021 Class 6A Division 1 title. It was the last of four crowns North Shore won during Kay's nine years at the helm.Jon Kay had never set foot in Texas before he arrived in Houston in 1996 for the Texas High School Coaches Association’s annual coaching school looking for a job.
He moved up to eighth grade in 1997 and to North Shore the following year. And now, 25 years later, he is a Texas high school football coaching legend.Kay is stepping away from the high school game and heading to Rice, where he will be the linebackers coach on Mike Bloomgren’s staff. After the news broke Monday, Kay was up past midnight answering congratulatory messages.
He was the head coach at North Shore for just nine seasons but claimed championships in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021 while posting a 117-18 record. He is a member of an elite club of just 16 head coaches who have won at least four UIL state titles.
