New Rockets coach Ime Udoka brings talent, and baggage
Ime Udoka, who last season led the Boston Celtics to the NBA Finals for the first time in 12 years, is the choice from among more than a half-dozen interviewees.
The Rockets were fortunate that Udoka was available. Of course, his availability is a direct byproduct of poor decision-making on his part.Udoka was fired a couple of months ago for what the team deemed an improper relationship with a staff member, a violation of company policy. The embarrassing affair made his continuation with the Celtics untenable.If so, the Rockets couldn’t have made a better hire.
But, unlike many players’ coaches, he is considered a tough one, who demands discipline and defense. The Celtics had the top defense in the league in his season there. The Rockets don’t have the defensive talent of the Celtics – and barely have any interest in that aspect of the game – but they now have a coach who will press for the best on that end of the floor.
