According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, six of the 10 most stolen cars last year carried Hyundai or Kia badges. While master thieves are typically able to break in and drive off a parked vehicle of their choosing rather quickly, the wave of Korean car thefts was triggered by instructions widely circulated on the Internet that made it a snap for even novice criminals to exploit using only a flathead screwdriver and a USB cable.
Hyundai and Kia reportedly agreed earlier this year to a $200 million settlement with an estimated 9 million vehicle owners to cover the cost of stolen or damaged vehicles. The frequency of whole vehicle theft, as calculated by HLDI, has now dropped by an estimated 64% for Kia and Hyundai vehicles that received the upgrade. Previously, HLDI reported that by the first half of 2023, thefts of older Hyundai and Kia models had increased by 1,000% since the pandemic’s onset.
