Florida, California and Texas saw an increase in recipients of federally administered payments.
The number of Americans receiving federally administered payments provided by the Supplemental Security Income program hit 7.43 million in April, an increase of more than 20,000 from March's figures, data from the Social Security Administration showed.States that saw the highest increases include Florida, which had 2,500 new recipients; California, which had almost 2,000; Texas, which had 1,500; and Pennsylvania, which had 1,567.
The increase in the number of SSI recipients recorded in April reverses the decline seen in March, when the number of recipients decrease slightly compared to February's data.In April, SSI recipients nationwide received almost $5.6 billion in benefits, with an average monthly payment of $698. Children received an average of $816 a month, while 18- to 64-year-olds received $744 and beneficiaries 65 or older received $575.
