Nan, an 11-year-old Labrador/golden retriever mix at West Berkeley’s Center for Early Intervention on Deafness that was invaluable in helping children there cope with their hearing loss, has died.Faces have been sad at West Berkeley’s Center for Early Intervention on Deafness , that wonderful preschool for toddlers who are deaf or hearing-impaired. The most beloved member of the staff has died.

“They didn’t give her much time, and I didn’t want her death and her retirement to be linked in the kids’ minds. So we had a series of retirement parties for her, going from class to class, and each class gave her a different treat. It was really special for her because we normally wouldn’t let them give her treats, which would distract her.

They remembered things they did with her, like ‘Remember when we threw the ball for her?’ and ‘Remember when she would jump off the platform on the playground?’ After she passed, I used simple language with them, sharing memories and modeling that it was OK to feel sad.
