The Texas Department of Public Safety said the episode shows the limitless ingenuity of people intent on smuggling drugs or people into the U.S. from Mexico.
In the cat-and-mouse game at the border, each side — the smugglers and law enforcement — is always looking for an edge on the other. In the latest example of envelope-pushing tactics, a smuggler determined to get back to Mexico led police on a high-speed chase that began in Palmview , a Hidalgo County town 10 miles west of McAllen.
Texas Department of Public Safety personnel, tracking the pursuit from the air, filmed the episode, and Lt. Chris Olivares, a spokesman for DPS' South Region, posted the 45-second video on social media with the hashtag #SPLASHDOWN. 'An example of how criminal smugglers evade law enforcement by driving their vehicles into the Rio Grande,' Olivares wrote on X. 'The videos show recent smuggling events captured by @TxDPS in the #RGV.
