Texas wasn’t the only time he turned down the chance to play for a power-conference team. Coaching changes and quarterback battles pushed him in that direction. Now, entering his junior season again, Stone finds himself in a similar situation poised to enter the national spotlight. Nevertheless, Stone faced internal battles about his decision, his coaches said. After starting all four years in high school, he took a backseat in his first two seasons on the Hilltop and watched Tanner Mordecai lead the offense. After his first season on campus, he watched“He felt like he was meant for a bigger stage, wanted the chance to win the Heisman, and he really considered going with Sonny to TCU,” Novakov said. “I thought that was really close to happening.
