The 2025 Golden Globe nominated film 'Sing Sing', starring Colman Domingo, will have a unique release strategy, premiering simultaneously in theatres and over 1,100 correctional facilities across the US. This marks the first time a theatrically released film will be accessible to incarcerated individuals nationwide. 'Sing Sing' is based on a true story and follows John Divine G. Winfield, an incarcerated man wrongly convicted of a crime, who finds purpose and hope through the Sing Sing Correctional Facility's Rehabilitation Through the Arts program. The film features a cast of formerly incarcerated actors who participated in the program, highlighting the transformative power of art and storytelling in their lives.

The silver screen is not the only place ' Sing Sing ' will be available to watch. Along with a return to theaters on Jan. 17, the 2025 Golden Globe nominated film, ' Sing Sing ,' will be shown in 1,100 correctional facilities across the country to over one million incarcerated individuals, according to an A24 press release obtained by TODAY.com. This is the first time a film released in theaters will be simultaneously available to incarcerated individuals nationwide, according to A24.

The film, starring Colman Domingo, is based on a true story and centers around John Divine G. Winfield (Domingo), an incarcerated individual imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. Domingo's portrayal received a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for best performance by a male actor in a motion picture in the drama category. “Sing Sing” also centers on the real-life Sing Sing Correctional Facility Rehabilitation Through the Arts program, an arts-in-prison program that helps those in prison develop critical life skills through the arts. Domingo's character participates in the theater program and finds purpose in acting alongside other incarcerated men. Many of the other cast members in the film are formerly incarcerated actors who went through the RTA program themselves. 'That was the most beautiful thing about this film... this has really changed their lives and they feel like they're able to be back in the communities, serving the communities and healing them as well,' Domingo said about his castmates in an interview on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers.' The film also features Jon-Adrian 'JJ' Velazquez, who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1998 and incarcerated at Sing Sing for most of his 24-year imprisonment of a 25-to-life sentencing. In 2021, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo granted Velazquez executive clemency and mentioned his work with Sing Sing in the statement. 'My journey through education and the arts gave me hope during my wrongful conviction, restoring my faith in humanity, sparking a culture of redemption during my incarceration,' Velasquez said in the press release. 'By providing access to the movie Sing Sing we can transform lives in ways beyond our imagination.'On Feb. 3, the cast of formerly incarcerated actors from 'Sing Sing' will perform 'Breakin' the Mummy's Code,' the play that inspired the film, in a closed A24 event that will be shown off-broadway in New York, according to Variety.
