It took two extraordinary performers — a former San Francisco resident and a current one — to help tell one extraordinary story in the new film

In Sing Sing Correctional Facility on the bank of New York’s Hudson River, a program called Rehabilitation Through the Arts has become the source of many stories.

And Sean San José, who was born and raised in San Francisco, is a multitalented writer, director and actor. He also founded Campo Santo, a multicultural ensemble theatrical group in The City, and serves as the current director of the Magic Theatre. “We both started theater companies here,” he told The Examiner. “All the artists support one another. You surround yourself with people who get your truth. I brought that with me everywhere else I went.”

This is all the more impressive when one considers that, aside from Domingo, San José, and Academy Award nominee Paul Raci, who plays volunteer director Brent Buell, the cast consists mainly of veterans of the actual RTA program. The movie’s great discovery is the formerly incarcerated Clarence Maclin, who plays a version of himself nicknamed Divine Eye. He’s no slouch: Most of his scenes are opposite Domingo, and they come across as equals.
