Make some noise for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. The screening series is the largest of its kind in all of North and South America combined.
The largest silent film festival in all of North and South America combined opens Wednesday at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre, a spot that ran “silents” in their heyday a century ago.
“The Merry Widow,” directed by Erich von Stroheim, closes the festival Sunday. Two royal cousins compete for the love of a dancer in this lively comedy, the biggest hit from the Austria-born auteur. Mysterious blue laser that lit up Grace Cathedral is coming back After a test run with confusingly coincidental origins, a massive blue laser will once again shine in Nob Hill this month
Additional offerings include “The Johnson Flood,” a silent disaster movie containing still-impressive effects; “The Dragon Painter,” a Hollywood production notable for its almost entirely Asian cast; “Kentucky Pride,” a racehorse tale from famed director John Ford, who began making films during the silent era; and Yasujiro Ozu’s “Walk Cheerfully,” which combines a Hollywood gangster flick with the kind of moving human story that would long distinguish the Japanese auteur’s work.
