Drivers were expected to encounter lengthy delays following a deadly crash on Thursday afternoon along a portion of Interstate 80/94 in Northwest Indiana, authorities said.
As of 2:03 p.m., Indiana State Police troopers were working a multi-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near Calumet Avenue, Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield said in a post on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.In a later post, Fifield said at least one person had died and two others were hospitalized with potentially life-threatening injuries.
UPDATE- This crash has resulted in at least one fatality. Two additional patients have been transported for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries. One eastbound lane had reopened as of 3:25 p.m., though the others remained shut down for crash reconstruction. The Indiana Department of Transportation Northwest office initially said that the eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed for"several hours."Drivers were encouraged to seek alternative routes.
