Naruto and Shinobi Underground
Fans of Naruto felt a particularly strong absence upon its conclusion in 2014, and even though the Boruto sequel series is picking up momentum lately, fans crave the Shonen Jump ninja magic. An authentic yet modern twist on ninja-themed manga has emerged with Shinobi Undercover by Ippon Takegushi and Santa Mitarashi, the same duo behind Candy Flurry.
This vision of ninjas operating in the shadows, instead of the more bombastic fights in Naruto, almost projects a parallel to Chainsaw Man's"Public Safety" department; this parallel is especially amusing given Shinobi Undercover's protagonist. As it turns out, she is also hopelessly clumsy, an accessible quality that, alongside her warmth, gives Yodaka hope to function well despite the social pressures of attending school with strangers undercover, and also creates most of the comedic moments in the manga.
Suddenly, all social blocks are gone, and Yodaka becomes an agile fighting machine, able to conceal himself before ambushing an opponent who previously dosed him with tranquilizers. Thus, a very different vision of Naruto, and a more authentic portrayal of ninjas emerge, yet still similarly exaggerated like in The Elusive Samurai.
