Frederick County Sheriff Charles Austin Jenkins was accused in a federal indictment of securing machine guns that were requested for his agency but, prosecutors say, were instead funneled to a local business that rented out the weapons.
, who has led the agency since 2006, was charged with conspiracy and making false statements to acquire the machine guns, prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland allege announced Wednesday. Robert Justin Krop, owner of the Machine Gun Nest in Frederick, faces the same charges. The indictment also accuses Krop of illegally possessing seven machine guns.
Though the letters were signed by Jenkins, the indictment alleges, Krop had asked Jenkins to submit the letters so Krop could obtain the guns and rent them to customers. In 2018 and 2019, the indictment states, the Machine Gun Nest made more than $100,000 in profits from machine gun rentals alone. Jenkins, who did not appear at the news conference, and Krop could not immediately be reached for comment.
