Marina Alderete Gavito has hired a political fundraiser heading into the runoff against Dan Rossiter, who has seen an influx of volunteers in the past couple weeks
Former Councilman Ana Sandoval was nearing the end of her third term in office. She was well-regarded in the community and had been mentioned as a future mayoral prospect. Terming out of office — San Antonio council members are limited to four two-year terms — seemed imminent.
Gavito’s pulling no punches headed into the June 10 runoff, hiring political fundraiser Norma Denham. Denham worked for three candidates in the May election— Mayor Ron Nirenberg, District 8 Councilman Manny Peláez and District 10 Councilman-elect Marc Whyte. Gavito is feeling good as well and said her team of block walkers is making rounds every day. Paying for people to knock on doors is where a lot of fundraising dollars will likely be funneled, Denham said.Infrastructure, public safety and greater accountability at City Hall are critical to Gavito. She wants to improve the office’s communication with constituents, fix drainage issues, build new greenways and parks, and guide sustainable development.
. He was accused of soliciting $5,000 in 1980 from a businessman under the guise that it was a donation for the San Antonio Youth Organization, then pocketing half as a “finder’s fee.” Though she has been tied up with the election, Gavito still makes time for one of her favorite hobbies: running. She views the campaign as similar to how she would see an actual race.
For years, Rossiter has thought about running for office, but before officially throwing his hat in the ring, he got to know the city through several organizations. Rodriguez, who will have to work with whoever is elected since District 7 falls within his precinct, said Gavito would be good at addressing the needs of a growing community while also putting neighborhoods first.Organizations, including the San Antonio Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 624, San Antonio Police Officers Association, Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio and the Valero Corporation PAC, have also lined up behind Gavito.
