ShazamFuryOfTheGods star Meagan Good comments on the lack of black female superheroes since Eartha Kitt played Catwoman. 'We hadn't really had any consistent superhero to the point of where it was more of a norm and less of a big deal when you see it.'
Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Meagan Good spoke on the importance of black superheroes in film and television when there had been so few roles in the past. Good has had a steady career in Hollywood since the mid-90s featuring on both the big screen and little. Her most well-known credits include Eve's Bayou, Deliver Us from Eva, D.E.B.S., and as part of the ensemble cast in the romantic comedy hit Think Like a Man.
Good donned tights and a cape for her superhero debut in the DCEU franchise film Shazam! The film centers on Billy Batson , a troubled boy who is gifted with an ancient magical force that gives him the ability to change into the superhero Shazam . When Batson faces off against the evil Dr. Thaddeus Silvana , he must summon the power of Shazam into his foster siblings, one of them being Darla Dudley .
"I'm excited about Shazam because a big thing for me was like, I want...little Black girls to see themselves in superheroes. That's something in terms of Black female superheroes that we haven't had until the last couple years outside of Eartha Kitt playing Catwoman, you know? But other than that, we hadn't really had any consistent superhero to the point of where it was more of a norm and less of a big deal when you see it.
Good reminisced about her childhood as a young black girl not having many role models but was able to see actors like Nia Long, Halle Berry, and Angela Bassett to have as inspiration. That sentiment is what attracted the actor to the Shazam! character of Darla. Good explains that Darla is a little girl that is transformed into a powerful superhero in a grown woman's body, but she is still just a young child adding,"so every little girl can see themselves in her.
Good was correct to point out the lack of black female superhero roles in film and television until the past few years. The relatively recent MCU franchise has given fans the Asgardian warrior Valkyrie and S.W.O.R.D agent Monica Rambeau , who has yet to embrace her newfound powers. But prior to the last decade, not many superhero roles were available to black women. Two of the most prominent roles were both played by Halle Berry: Catwoman and X-Men's Storm.
