ICYMI: SFU researchers find Google algorithms place innocuous job titles on prominent conspiracy theorists

at the School of Communication at SFU looked at the subtitles Google automatically suggested for 37 known conspiracy theorists and found that, “in all cases, Google’s subtitle was never consistent with the actor’s conspiratorial behaviour.”

Other examples include Sandy Hook school shooting denier and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who is listed as “American radio host” and Jerad Miller, a white nationalist responsible for a 2014 Las Vegas shooting, who is labelled as “American performer.” “We don’t know exactly what are going into these algorithms but what we do know is that there’s a definite pattern happening, where people like mass murders, terrorists, conspiracy theorists, are often being labelled by their media titles,” said Stewart.
