Law enforcement officials in San Francisco are demanding that four online retailers remove license plate covers from their virtual shelves.

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu announced Wednesday that his office sent cease-and-desist letters to Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Etsy, which sell the covers in their online marketplaces. The covers can be used by motorists to avoid being identified by law enforcement or bridge toll cameras. 'Our profound hope is that these four online retailers will do the right thing and ensure that these products are not displayed on their sites,' Chiu said at a Wednesday news conference.

' The California Vehicle Code says it's illegal to 'sell a product or device that obscures, or is intended to obscure, the reading or recognition of a license plate by visual means, or by an electronic device.' A news release from Chiu's office also said it's illegal to own a license plate cover that obscures the plate number, and fines for obscuring it can be $250 per violation.
