The new outdoor space features plants native to San Diego and will be used for educational workshops for museum visitors
Alongside the trolley tracks in downtown San Diego, visitors at The New Children’s Museum can now enjoy a small garden filled with plants native to San Diego.
Students from Barona Indian Charter School celebrate as they cut the ribbon during the grand opening of the New Inclusive Garden Project ‘Iipay Nyechewuuwa garden they helped construct at the Children’s Museum in San Diego on Thursday. “This is Kumeyaay land, and I think people that live in San Diego need to know the history,” Egan-Hedley said. “There was something here before newcomers arrived — it was wonderful and glorious.
Kurosh Yahyai, New Children’s Museum studio manager, said the partnership to create the new garden space happened organically during a tour of the Barona Museum. He said that in wanting to revamp the New Children’s Museum garden space, he was inspired to collaborate with the students. Barona Principal Julie Cushman said that getting the students into the garden helps them connect better with what they’re learning in the classroom.
